Native Grapes to Mallorca

The climate in Mallorca allows for a variety of grapes to be grown, creating a range of wines that can be wise, subtle, complex, and at the same time, full of energy and direct. There are about 1,100 hectares of planted vines on the island of Mallorca alone.  Amongst the white vines you can find international grapes like Chardonnay, Macabeo, Malvasía, Moscatel, Riesling, Sauvignon blanc and Viognier. You can also find endemic varietals such as Prensal Blanc and Giró Ros.

The native island grapes create beautifully distinct mediterranean wines that could be compared to a Chardonnay. According to winemaker Toni Gelabert, the organoleptic profile of these autochthonous wines are great for pairing with food as well as for aging. Giró Ros is used to produce wines with a high level of alcohol, while Prensal Blanc is used as a blending grape to create lighter wines with lower acidity.

As for the red grapes Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Monastrell, Syrah, Tempranillo and Pinot Noir are planted. The native mallorcan grapes are Callet, Escurçac, Manto NegroFogoneu, and Gorgollasa.

Manto negro is a thick skinned grape rich in sugar and aroma. Manto negro is used to make big wines, full of fruit aromas with structure and a medium-high alcohol content.
