Appellation of origin Pla i Llevant
This designation of origin dates back to 1999. Currently, 13 wineries and 70 winegrowers hold the D.O. Pla i Llevant, representing a total of 444 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards of this D.O. are located in the centre and east of the island.
Appellation of origin Binissalem
The D.O. Binissalem dates back to 1990 and covers the centre of Mallorca, at an altitude range between 75 and 200 metres above sea level. It comprises roughly 140 hectares of vineyards.
Geographical indications
The wines of Mallorca are also split into 3 geographical indications:
Wines of:
- La Tierra de Mallorca.
- La Tierra Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord.
- La Tierra Illes Balears.
La Tierra de Mallorca.
It includes wines made from 100% Mallorcan-grown grapes that have been bottled in the production area. Red grapes such as Manto Negro, Callet or Fogoneu, and white grapes such as Prensal, Macabeo, Malvasía or Chardonnay are used.
La Tierra Serra de Tramuntana-Costa Nord.
Wines produced from Andratx to Pollença. Malvasia is a common grape in the area, from which the white and dry wine bearing its name is obtained. The vineyards grow on terraces next to the sea.
La Tierra Illes Balears.
These wines are produced entirely on the Balearic Islands. The primary white grapes are Viognier, Chardonnay or Parellada. The reds are Pinot Noir, Fogoneu or Tempranillo.
